Natural Disasters 9th Edition by Patrick Leon Abbott updates text, tables and figures; provides new photos; locations extra emphasis on processes and fewer on case histories. Chapter 1 now features a temporary section on disease pandemics. Chapter 13 on floods is rewritten. A brief, new Chapter 16 pulls collectively coastal processes and adds rip currents and tidal bores.

Chapter 18 on mass extinctions (Great Dyings) is updated and available for inclusion in the textbook. Significant events added include the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami; the record-setting 2011 U.S. tornado year; and the felony conviction of seven Italian scientists for not giving better prediction of the L'Aquila earthquake.

Coverage on weather principles and tornadoes has been expanded and integrated in a new chapter 11. Sections have been rewritten, many figures have been revised. Climate has been integrated into one chapter (12, Climate Change) with expanded coverage of the 20th and 21st centuries including the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports. There is expanded coverage of recent and future climate with 12 new sections and numerous new figures.

All chapters have been revised and updated. The book retains its focus on Earth's natural processes and the disasters that occur when the Earth concentrates its energy and releases it, causing death and destruction. The text aims to explain important principles about the Earth and then develop further understanding through numerous case studies.

Learning aids at the conclusion of every chapter include Terms to Remember, Questions for Review and Questions for Further Thought. Weather principles are expanded and integrated into one chapter with severe weather. Climate is integrated into one chapter with expanded coverage of the 20th & 21st centuries including the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports. Statistics and Tables are updated.

Many changes in chapter on continental earthquakes: A) new section on Pacific Northwest U.S.; B) new section on 2006 Hawaii EQs; C) rewritten section on intraplate EQs; D) deletion of fracture-zone hypothesis. On volcanoes there is more emphasis on magmas, and less on rocks.

The text covers the most significant natural hazards, from geologic to oceanographic to atmospheric to astronomic to demographic, and their associated phenomena. The broad range of natural disasters topics allows each instructor to select those chapters that cover their interests and local hazards.
