The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology 12th Edition, by Frederick K. Lutgens, Edward J. Tarbuck and Dennis G Tasa is the standard introduction in its field, reinforcing basic concepts with everyday, easy-to-grasp examples. This revision retains the hallmarks professors have come to expect from Tarbuck and Lutgens: a friendly, largely non-technical narrative, timely coverage of recent atmospheric events, and carefully crafted artwork by leading science illustrator Dennis Tasa.

The Twelfth Edition maintains a student-friendly approach while evolving to address various course challenges and trends. New digital visualization and assessment tools are now available on MyMeteorologyLab, a new resource that both encourages student self-study and enables instructors to manage their courses online, with customizable assessments for students.

Each chapter in this revision is organized by a new active learning path to help guide and engage non-science majors. A greater focus on popular and increasingly important Severe & Hazardous Weather applications, new critical visual analysis Eye on the Atmosphere features, as well as new discussions of the real-world career opportunities of meteorology with Professional Profile essays, make the science both relevant and exciting.

A striking new design makes the textbook more engaging for visual learners and incorporates more compound arts to help students compare images such as weather maps and Tasa illustrations to photos from the ground. Engaging students with real events, the authors continue to provide current reports such as a new introduction to Chapter 10, Thunderstorms and Tornadoes, includes discussion and photos of “Super Tuesday” (the day of many 2008 presidential primaries) and the tornado outbreak in 24 states.

A great number of updates to research methods have been included to help students understand how scientists work. For example, a new discussion of “VORTRAC—A New Hurricane Tracking Technique” is detailed in Chapter 11. Chapter 14, The Changing Climate, is especially updated to include the findings presented in the fourth assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
